On the History of the START project (1985–1988)

The paper presents the history of START, an ad-hoc team created in 1985 to develop fifth-generation computers in response to the "Japanese challenge". As a new form of the organization and implementation of scientific and technical projects during the perestroika, START contributed to the establishment of the Institute of Informatics Systems of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS) in 1990.
